Ben Morton grew up in a very small town in central Virginia near the Blue Ridge Mountains. When he was a teenager his mom bought a few recreation kayaks and encouraged Ben and his brother to start kayaking with her on the weekends. He started paddling when he was 16 on lazy rivers in central Virginia. As he got older his interest in whitewater developed and he began traveling to the Rappahannock and James Rivers in Virginia.
Ben eventually branched out into slalom kayaking, freestyle kayaking, OC-1, and most recently SUP. His paddling has taken him all over the world, and his favorite river is the Soca River, Slovenia. These days he teaches a variety of paddle sports throughout the country and abroad, keeping busy in a multitude of crafts, but says, “My roots will always be in whitewater kayaks.”
Over the past 13 years Ben has found adventure in his river travels, upon reflection Morton says, “These adventures have given me moments of clarity, helped me through important life decisions and ultimately have pushed me to pursue a path less traveled.”
Ben is an extraordinary instructor in the American Canoe Association, he is wealth of knowledge and is a valuable ambassador to both Kokatat and the sport.
