Each year the ladies of the Washington kayaking community come together to make new friends, encourage each other, and celebrate the joy of the river. We choose to paddle the Skykomish River outside of Index, WA. It’s a picturesque river with spired peaks above, and blue green water below. It’s a day full of laughter and fun. Sometimes you just need to rally with Team Estrogen.
I always get a lot of questions as to why I plan these ladies days on the water. In the beginning I did it to meet other women who kayak; I was looking for girls who liked to get after it on the water, like I did. I met some of my best friends on that first ladies day. Now I look back and see that not only did I find friends, I also developed a bond and connection, and was empowered by these strong, confident women. For the first time I felt like I was part of the team, rather than someone who needed looking out for. So I continue these ladies paddling days to encourage other women, promote female friendships on the water, and hope these ladies have the same positive experience as I’ve had.
Our fall ladies paddling day was a complete success. It was a beautiful Pacific Northwest Day - a little rainy with a peep of sun. The level was a solid medium, and the river was a splashy wild ride. Boulder Drop - the crescendo of the run, was a blast. A few ladies stepped up and styled the drop for the first time. I love seeing that confidence, and I also love seeing the confidence to know when to step up and when to just have fun. The day exuded camaraderie, encouragement, and shenanigans.
